Finalists of "It's a Red Christmas" Nail Art Contest

Our "It's a Red Christmas" nail art competition is now over.

All nail art entries were carefully reviewed to make sure that each participant followed the contest guidelines. All valid and invalid entries received an email of confirmation or an explanation to why an entry is invalid.

After careful elimination, here are the 23 finalists:

It's a Red Christmas Nail Art Contest Entry
In the Netherlands, Christmas isn't a big thing like in America. We celebrate Sinterklaas. As the Dutch colonised in America, we brought the tradition of Sinterklaas with us, which is the reason everybody celebrates christmas with Santa Claus. So I decided to do nothing with christmas trees, Santa claus or reindeers, but to go back to the original story of christmas: the birth of Jesus.

"It's a Red Christmas" Nail Art Contest

Simply Rins turned 3 this November 2012 and I decided a nail art contest is a good way to celebrate it. This blog has given me so much and I know that a big part of that is because of its readership. Let this challenge be my way to thank all of you for your appreciation, support, and most especially for your acceptance.

RULES and REGULATIONS

01 - Category: Freehand
The design must be hand painted. Stamping, marbling, using decals, using nail stickers, and using nail embellishments is NOT allowed. I do not have anything against these techniques and accessories. But since I've dedicated this blog to freehand nail designs, I decided to apply the same for this nail art contest.

02 - Theme: It's a Red Christmas!
Well, you know I love red and since it's almost Christmas, I decided to combine the 2 ideas. Be creative and imaginative. The theme does not necessarily mean that you need a red manicure. Just make sure the overall design conveys the idea of a red Christmas.

03 - One (1) entry per person only.

04 - The nail design must be painted on at least four (4) of your own nails. You may have an accent nail, but all the other nails should also have a design.

05 - The use of nail wheels and stick-on artificial nails are NOT allowed.

06 - The nail design you will submit must be new and original. It must not have been previously submitted or published on any form of media.

07 - You may use the following nail art tools:

  • An analog signature is a watermark that is included in the picture as you shoot and not added after. No digital watermarks please. This procedure will protect your photo from copyright infringement and will ensure that the picture is truly yours.
  • You may use your full name or your nick name for the analog signature. If you have a blog, you may write your blog title and URL.
  • Please refer to the following examples on how to create an analog signature:

Nail Art Tutorial: Collared Nails

A few days ago, I was challenged to create a nail art design that mimics a fashion trend. The challenge came from a nail art contest that megastyleph organized. I actually posted about it here.

Each participant was asked to browse the megastyle website for fashion trends and create a nail design inspired by that. I spotted a photo of accessorizing classic pieces to create a twist and I thought it was perfect to my style of nail art. This is what I came up with:

Nail Art: The Little Mermaid

What is your favorite fairy tale?

Mine is the story of The Little Mermaid and my favorite movie adaptation was the one released by Walt Disney Pictures on 1989. This is a story of a young mermaid who was willing to sacrifice her tail to win the love of a human prince.

In a recent nail art challenge, participants were asked to create a nail design that complies with a Disney inspired theme. I only had The Little Mermaid in mind for the challenge. I can't imagine doing anything else. And so I created a Little Mermaid nail art design. This is by far, the hardest design I have painted on my nails.

In the film, the little mermaid was named Ariel and she had a fish best friend called Flounder. She collects human things from sunken ships and goes to Scuttle, a seagull, to identify those she collected. In the movie, Ariel valued freedom and embraced curiosity above all else. This personality led her father, King Tritan, to assign a paranoid crab named Sebastian to look after Ariel. He was to make sure that our little mermaid stays under the sea and not follow her curiosity to explore the surface. But nothing could stop Ariel from surfacing that eventually led to love. Ariel fell for a human prince and she sacrificed her beautiful voice to the sea witch so that she could have legs and gain a chance to win the prince's love. In the end, their love conquered all. King Tritan gave her daughter legs and Ariel and her prince lived happily ever after.

Nail Art: I've Got the Blues ... Clues!

Do you know Blues Clues? It's a television show for kids who's star is a dog named "Blue" basically because he's colored blue. It's an educational show for children wherein Blue is always presented with problems or mysteries to solve. He then gathers clues with the help of his friends. I made a Blues Clues nail design as an entry to a nail art challenge with the theme: I've Got the Blues!

I painted Blue on my ring finger as accent nail and his blue paw on my other nails. And so, yes, I became "literal" in interpreting the contest's theme! The television show was the first thing that came into mind when I was brainstorming on what design to submit.

Nail Art: Cupcake Using Konad Image Plates

Last month, OC Nail Art held a nail art contest through their Facebook page. The challenge was to create a nail design on your hands and feet using only Konad products such as image plates and special polishes. The only exemption is the base color, wherein participants are allowed to choose any brand of nail polish they prefer. Designs must be posted on the OC Nail Art Facebook Page and must show both manicure and pedicure having designs on all 5 toes and fingers.

Several weeks passed and I still haven't decided on a design yet. I wanted to create a design that will show how versatile Konad stamping nail art can be. I wanted to show that truly, imagination is the only limit using Konad products, specifically, its image plates. So after a long while, I decided to recreate my Cupcake nail art using the few Konad plates that I have.

Here's the result:

You have to forgive me because I failed to take separate photos of my hands and feet! I was actually engrossed into taking a decent picture of both my mani and pedi in 1 single shot that I totally forgot to do separate shots! @_@

Nail Art: Proud of the Philippines

First of all, I'd like to greet everyone a happy Chinese New Year! I know I said that I'd be posting another CNY nail art but I got busy with work and I'm letting my nails grow and rest a little. I'll be making Valentine's nail designs very very soon. :)

For the meantime, let me share with you this nail art design that I submitted as an entry to Parokeets' Nail Art Challenge: Show Off Your Country. I've been meaning to do something like this and the challenge was the perfect opportunity to do a nail design that is inspired by my country, the Philippines.

Here's the nail design that I submitted:

Nail Art: Chinese New Year 2011

Kung Hei Fat Choy!

When most of us celebrate the new year every 1st of January, the Chinese celebrates it rather differently. The Chinese New Year falls on a different date every year depending on the lunisolar Chinese calendar. This year (2011), they will be celebrating the new year on February 03. I'm not Chinese but the Philippines (my home country) is one of the countries where there is a significant population of Chinese. I even have a Chinese partner! :) And so, I wish to contribute to the celebration by coming up with a Chinese New Year nail design!

This is the first of 2 designs that I did for this occasion:

Chinese New Year nail art design

I used 2 coats of China Glaze China Rouge (I used this brand intentionally *wink*) for the base color. This is definitely one of my favorite shades of red and application is superb. It's almost opaque with one coat. That's 2 coats of Lucidarling White on my right hand's ring finger. I love this nail polish as well. I'm already on my 2nd bottle!

Better Late Than Never

I've entered a few nail art contests last year and luckily, I won in 2 challenges that I entered. But unfortunately, it takes a very (as in) long time for the prizes to reach the Philippines via air mail. I guess it's just really hard to send something to our part of the world. Anyway, I wanted to wait for both prizes to arrive before I post this. After almost 2 months, I finally have them!

Last October 2010, Polish Freshie held a Halloween Nail Art Contest and this was my winning entry:

Crawling Spider Nail Art by Simply Rins

The Crawling Spider nail design was also included my Halloween nail art series. It has been one of my favorites until now and I really did enjoy doing it. This was the prize that Polish Freshie sent me:

Nail Art: Christmas Gift Boxes

I know it's not yet December, but I submitted this nail art design to a nail art contest that asked participants to paint our nails that depicts our favorite part of the holidays. I'd like to share this with you. I chose Christmas and since I belong to a non-traditional family, I find that gift wrapping is one of the ways I can express my creativity (aside from nail art) during this joyous season. Yes, we really don't decorate. :)

And so I came up with this nail art design:

Nail Art Christmas Gift Boxes 11
Christmas gift boxes nail art!

I just realized that I'm into a multi-colored nail art phase! My previous Caronia Butterfly Nail Art also had a different shade of nail polish per nail! Hmm, I think my mood is trying to cheer me up through my current nail designs. I wanted to create something simple but lively that's why I opted to paint each nail a different color. The colored the bow the same shade on all nails to have something constant. I felt having different colors for the bow will make the design confusing.

AND THE WINNER IS ...

After 3 weeks, there is now a winner for my 1st nail art contest! Thank you to all those who participated, to all those who voted, to the sponsors, and of course, to our panel of judges which really took the time to score each of our top 5 nail art entries and comment on their individual grades. You all made the celebration of my 1st blogoversary a success!

To recap, I first asked you, my readers, to vote for your top 3 favorite nail art entries. Your votes will determine the 5 finalists that will be scored by 5 guest judges. Each of the judges was required to grade each finalist between 1 to 10, 10 being the highest score. I've also asked them to provide a short explanation to their grades.

You may view the judges' profiles at "Color It Red Nail Art Contest Top 5 Entries.

Here are the judges' scores:

And so, I'd like to congratulate KORYNA of http://korynails.blogspot.com for winning the "Color It Red" nail art contest! Here is her entry:

"Color It Red" Nail Art Contest Top 5 Entries

Last October 25, 2010, I announced a nail art contest in celebration of my blog's 1st year anniversary. By November 6, I've posted 31 valid entries from 24 participants and asked you to choose 3 nail art entries that you think should be included in the finals. The top 5 most chosen entries will then be presented to our 5 guest judges who will determine our lucky winner.

Here's a brief profile of each of our judges:

1. Carina Alcantara
She is my mother, whom I fondly call Nanay (a Filipino term for the world mother). She remains to be my biggest fan and is now into nail art too! Red is also her favorite color but prefers nude colors for her nails. She's one of the few people I know that has an eye for things that are beautiful.
2. Nadine de Guzman

Nadine is the owner and designer of Posh Pocket Shoes or simply called Poshies. Her love for shoes and the idea of saving your feet from wearing heels the whole day inspired her to design these chic, comfortable, and foldable shoes! Her creativity as a designer will surely add spice to determining our lucky winner.
3. Don Trivino

Don of http://bonggaba.com has been a long time friend. He's one of the few that has been with me since I started blogging. He has been, and still is, an honest to goodness critic. And so I believe he'll make a valuable judge to our nail art contest.
4. Edrose Corsame

Edrose is licensed Geodetic Engineer. Her profession may seem so far out to involve her to our nail vanity. However, her inputs to this contest will definitely feed our curiosity as to how ladies that have been recently introduced to nail art perceive this latest "it" accessory.
5. Alvin Gale Tan

Alvin is the author of 7107 Reasons To Love Pinas, a personal project that aims to collect 7107 unique reasons why you should love the Philippines. One thing we share in common and love to do is talk. Exchanging opinions has been our favorite pastime. And so I'm sure he'll have some interesting views regarding the final entries. Moreover, a male perspective will add a healthy twist to the contest.

Judging rules:

Nail Art: Elvis Rocked My Nails

It has been too long (well, it has been more than a week) since I've shared with you a nail art post. I've been busy lately with my first nail art contest. As of this post, voting is in progress to determine five (5) nail art entries that will be included in the finals. If you haven't voted, please visit It's Time To Vote! (Color It Red) and complete the voting form.

Last week, I've chanced upon a nail art contest at The Lacquerista with a "Rock n Roll" theme. It took me a few days to decide on what I'll do. Thanks to my lovely sister for her idea.

Here's what I came up with:

Nail Art Elvis Presley 03
Elvis Presley nail art design! 2 accent nails, both on the ring finger for both hands.
I figured Elvis will be lonely without his guitar!

It's Time To Vote! (Color It Red)

Hi, everyone!

First, I'd like to thank all those who took time from their schedule to do their nails and join my first nail art contest. I really do appreciate that. I'm also touched that some of you shared with me how you found out about Simply Rins my blog and how it inspired you. I enjoyed reading every story that you sent me.

I received a total of 31 valid entries from 24 participants! Selection of the winner will comprise of 2 stages. The first stage will be entirely up to you. Based on the results of your votes, five (5) nail art entries will enter the final stage. These 5 nail designs will then be presented to our guest judges who will determine our lucky winner. Due to the number of entries, I've decided to have 5 guest judges instead of just 3. I'll be revealing their identities and judging procedure when I post our 5 finalists.

Before presenting our lovely nail art entries, here are the voting rules:

1. You have to choose three (3) nail art designs that you think should be included in the finals. You also have to comment as to why you chose those 3 entries. These comments may appear when we present our top 5 finalists. Your choices may be in any order. I have prepared a form below to facilitate this choosing process and to make it easier to tally votes.

2. Write the name of the participant when entering your choice. In case a participant have 2 entries, please indicate first or second entry by placing (1) or (2) after the name.

Celebrating One Year With A Nail Art Contest

This would be Simply Rins' first contest and giveaway. The contest is open to everyone, regardless if you are a beginner on nail art. Rest assured that voting and judging will not only depend on skill but also on imagination and creativity.

Nail Art Red Butterflies 02The theme is quite simple -- Color It Red. To those who've been reading my blog for quite some time now, I'm sure you know that red is my favorite color. And so, I've decided that it is the perfect theme for this nail art contest. I know it is quite general but I really want to flood this contest with the color of love! You may use other colors but I want the nail art to be dominantly red. Surprise me! :)

Here are the rules:

Nail Art: Halloween Crawling Spiders

Eleven days to go before October ends and this is my 6th Halloween nail art! I have a few more Halloween characters I'd like to feature here but I just need to do another spider nail art! The idea came the other night while my sister and I were lounging at our living room. We just came from dinner and since our television was under repair, we just sat there, played with Mumay (my sister's dog), and did practically nothing. It was raining and I guess this sort of weather makes people really weary?

Speaking of the weather, our country has been hit by Typhoon Juan (international name is Megi) yesterday that greatly affected the northern part of the Philippines. There have reports of people who died due to this natural disaster. Please pray for us and the safety of those who live in the provinces that were largely affected by the storm.

I simply call this Halloween nail art Crawling Spiders. Here's why:

Nail Art Halloween Crawling Spiders 07
Spiders are crawling out of my nails!

I don't particularly like spiders. But for some strange reason, I keep wanting to do Halloween nail designs with them! No accent nail for this nail art. I've decided to practice my freehand painting and wear spiders on all my nails!

Here's how the base color looks bare:
