When most of us celebrate the new year every 1st of January, the Chinese celebrates it rather differently. The Chinese New Year falls on a different date every year depending on the lunisolar Chinese calendar. This year (2011), they will be celebrating the new year on February 03. I'm not Chinese but the Philippines (my home country) is one of the countries where there is a significant population of Chinese. I even have a Chinese partner! :) And so, I wish to contribute to the celebration by coming up with a Chinese New Year nail design!
This is the first of 2 designs that I did for this occasion:

I used 2 coats of China Glaze China Rouge (I used this brand intentionally *wink*) for the base color. This is definitely one of my favorite shades of red and application is superb. It's almost opaque with one coat. That's 2 coats of Lucidarling White on my right hand's ring finger. I love this nail polish as well. I'm already on my 2nd bottle!
The Chinese New Year is said to be the most celebrated and the most important event for the Chinese. The Chinese Lunar Calendar is marked by the 12 animals that consists the Chinese Zodiac. It reflects and attempts to explain people's behavior and beliefs. 2011 is the year of the Rabbit. Hence, that cute bunny as an accent nail for my Chinese New Year nail art!
According to Chinese tradition, the Rabbit is a lucky sign. Does this have anything to do with the belief that a rabbit's foot is a lucky charm? Well, I need much luck this year and I hope it pours in. :)
That Chinese character means "Rabbit", which I asked my partner to verify for me if I got the strokes correctly. As for my other nails, I used an image from the BM02 plate and stamped it using white Konad special polish. I was aiming for something festive.
Specifically, 2011 is the year of the white metal rabbit! Aside from the 12 Chinese Zodiac, each year is also marked by an element: wood, fire, water, earth, and metal. And so when I bought a rabbit ornament for me and my family, I specifically looked for a metal rabbit. It is now sitting on top of my personal nail station.
I've also entered this Chinese New Year nail design to a nail art contest hosted by Nail Art Express. Voting is ongoing until the end of this month. If you would like to see the other fab entries and vote, you may do so by visiting Nail Art Express' Chinese New Year Nail Art Contest.
I'll be posting another Chinese New Year nail design before February 03, 2011.
