Nail Art: Purple Bricks

I was having an early dinner last weekend when I received a text message from a friend who asked me how I was. I wanted to reply that I was feeling lonely but said I was fine instead. I've realized that no matter how used I am to being alone, one can sometimes be a lonely number. And even though I have met some that showed interest, I can't seem to bring down the wall I have put up. Can I blame the number of times I've been broken?

My best friend these days has been unavailable so I decided to channel my feelings the best way I know how -- through nail art.


Wall was the idea. The question is how I'd be able to convey that in a nail design. I figured a brick wall inspired design would do the job. The concept is not original as there have been several nail art bloggers who have done their version of the bricks nails. So in order to put some personal flair into this design, I decided to use a purple palette and alter the brick placements.

I simply called this Purple Bricks Nail Art Design. Take a look:


Can you spot how I painted the idea a little different? More into that later after I share with you the materials I used for this nail design.


Without a doubt, I wanted a purple ombre manicure. After scanning my polish rack, I chose to wear 2 coats of OPI Vant to Bite My Neck as base color. This is a deep purple creme nail lacquer that is highly opaque. It can be a one coater but I prefer to always polish my nails with at least 2 layers. Yes, I am OC that way. ;)

Consistency and formula are excellent, giving you no problems with application.


This is a freehand or hand-painted nail art and I used a dotting tool and acrylic paints to achieve the results.

I initially wanted to use a nail art brush for this design. But I realized a dotting tool would make my life easier. And it did! This is one of those nail designs that doesn't need to be that accurate. You probably have noticed that already with the above photos.


Now, more on the design itself!

Here are a few personal touches I used:

• Choice of color. I chose purple just because I was not in the mood to wear a happy color. And at the back of my mind, I didn't want the design to shout "bricks". I actually wanted it to look more like a pattern on the nails.
• Different sizes and positions. Normally, bricks would be placed side by side, horizontally. So to make this nail design a little more interesting, I painted the bricks in different sizes and positioned them both horizontally and vertically. Were you able to spot this?

Since I used a dotting tool for this nail art, the bricks didn't have sharp corners. I didn't mind because I think it gave a more detailed effect. How was that? Would you accept my explanation if I tell you that I imagined the bricks were cemented and this is how it would look? ;)


From a distance, this bricks nail art can give the appearance of cracked nails. If this were done with brown and yellow, people would probably be reminded of Thing from the Fantastic Four! In the end, I loved the results and I'm sure other nail artists can have fun with this too using a different color combination.

I would also recommend this design for nail art beginners who are looking for an inspiration that is easy to do.
