Nail Art: Heart Patches

This is another Valentine's inspired nail design. I'm still in the heart shape frenzy but I wanted a base color that is non-traditional for the occasion. Luckily, a recent polish haul from Digital Traincase arrived 2 days ago and I was anxious to use one particular shade. I figured I could come up with a design that would make this color fit for Valentine's and the result was heart patches.

Take a look!

This nail design is symbolic. I've had my heart broken too many times, I don't know if it's still working. I sometimes feel my heart is a quilt, mended with patches, just so it could keep going. I'm sorry for being cheesy. It's just that this particular nail design says a lot about my heart.

Anyway, my idea was to come up with something simple but with a twist. I took inspiration from my personal feelings and came up with the concept of heart patches.

Base color is 2 coats of OPI Fly from the Minaj Collection. Application is a breeze and opaque in 2 coats. This is my favorite among the colors in the collection.

I hand painted the design using acrylic paints, a detailing and striping nail art brush.

I must say that I truly find this shade gorgeous. I was staring at my nails after polishing and I didn't want to lose its beauty by coming up with a Valentine's inspired nail design that is colorful. What I wanted is to enhance the color and figured that using only black and white can help me achieve my objective. I think it did.

On every nail, I painted one big heart and one small heart. The big ones are outlined in black and I made stitch marks all around the heart as how you would see on patches. I used a striping nail art brush for the stitches. No outlines for the small hearts because I wanted to emphasize the heart patches. Oh, and I added a few white dots on random places just because. :)

Here's a close-up look:

I personally love how this turned out and I hope you liked it too. And I also hope this will send out the message that although hearts can be broken, what matters is stitching the broken parts back together so it could love again.

  7. Hi Rins,

I've been stalking your blog for such a long time and I just had to post a comment seeing that valentines day is round the corner. Your designs are so neat and precise, I've been meaning to try some nail art but my nubbins are so short and my nail bed is almost non existant. Your nails are fabulous, and your designs are out of this world, doable and cute as well. I especially love this mani and I wish you all the best this year - professionally, and emotionally and in your love life as well!!! Keep bringing on those designs girl...you inspire so much of us!!!!

It was really nice of you to finally leave a message here in Simply Rins. Thank you. Reading your message made my heart melt. It is always overwhelming to know that my blog or nail designs inspire other people, even in a small way.

My nail beds are actually small too. I just grow them a little longer for them to look like that. Thank you for the compliment regarding my nails. Not many thinks the same way, so that really means a lot. :)

  13. These are so cute! They are perfect for valentines day! Quick question.....are those natural nails? And if so how can I file my nails to be like that? All my nails are different shapes, square, round, and just some odd shapes. Thanks!

Yes, those are my natural nails. I've always preferred square shaped nails and that is how I file them. I didn't know how to shape my nails before. So what I did is to have a nail technician file them for me when I visit the salon. After awhile, I learned how to maintain them to the shape that I wanted. I would suggest finding the nail shape that would best complement your hands before deciding what shape to maintain. :)

I don't exactly know how to answer your "how" question. Since I'm maintaining square shaped nails, I consciously file my nails in a straight horizontal direction and slightly round the corners.
