Nuffnang gave its members a chance to catch the premiere of Salt last Wednesday, 28 July 2010 at Greenbelt 3 Cinema 1. I lost at their mini contest that could give me 3 movie passes to catch the premiere showing. Luckily, a friend who won Nuffnang's contest gave me his tickets because he couldn't come to the premiere due to his schedule. Thank you so much to the Singing Blogger for sharing with me your tickets. My partner and I truly enjoyed watching Angelina Jolie portray Evelyn Salt.
I began to admire Jolie in the movie Tomb Raider (2001), where she played Lara Croft, the popular video game character. It had a sequel 2 years later entitled Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. I can't think of any other actress that can portray this adventurous game character. Who else would look good enough in that skimpy outfit that Lara Croft is so famous for?
My Panasonic Lumix LX3 is named Lara primarily because of my admiration for Angelina Jolie's portrayal of Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider movies.
And then there was the movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2005) where Angelina Jolie shared the lead with now husband Brat Pitt. An action packed movie where Jolie appeared smart and sexy at the same time.
Rumor has it that it was during the filming of Mr. and Mrs. Smith that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt fell for each other. Soon after, they got married. Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston at when the movie was still in shooting. Sorry Jennifer, my vote goes to Angelina.
On 2008, Jolie had another action movie -- Wanted. She played opposite James McAvoy. In this action movie, Angelina Jolie is Fox, a professional assassin who gets to train McAvoy to become one as well. Jolie was awesome in this movie especially during the scenes where she was handling a sports car!
This year, Angelina Jolie is playing the role of Evelyn Salt in the movie Salt. Interestingly, the script for Salt was first offered to Tom Cruise. Yes, supposedly, Salt is a guy. But Cruise feared that the role is very similar to his spy character in his Mission Impossible films so he declined the offer. It was Columbia Picture's executive Amy Pascual who suggested Angelina Jolie to Philip Noyce, who directed Salt. I must say it was a very good choice! I think Jolie gave justice to the character.
And so from the original Edwin Salt, the character of Evelyn Salt was created. The plot was still same but certain revisions has to be made with the script to fit a female character portrayal.
So, what's next for Angelina Jolie? She's currently rumored to portray Cleopatra, with the same movie title. It is a biopic of Cleopatra, based on the novel by Stacy Schiff entitled, Cleopatra: A Life. Producers and Shiff believes that Angelina Jolie has the perfect look to portray Egypt's last pharaoh. However, some people think that Jolie is "too white" to play Cleopatra. Debate is still ongoing on the true physical attributes of Cleopatra. Is she black? White? In between?
Cleopatra is well known for her beauty. She was a legendary temptress who was known to have used her good looks to seduce Roman Emperor Julius Ceasar and General Mark Anthony. It's because of this that producers feel that Angelina Jolie is perfect for the role. In fact, Michael Pietsch, a publisher of Little Brown, said to UsMagazine, "Angelina Jolie radiates grace and power, exactly the qualities of the most intriguing ruler who ever lived." I couldn't agree more. If Jolie will accept this project, it would be another movie to anticipate.
Go Jolie! :)
